Ephesians 4:9-10

From our Sunday morning worship service on July 25th 2021

Ephesians 4:9-10

(Now this, “He ascended”—what does it mean but that He also first descended into the lower parts of the earth? 10 He who descended is also the One who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.)

A brief pause from the “unity” talk as Paul gives us the reason why we can trust the gifts----because the giver of the gifts is Jesus Christ

He first descended to Earth

John 1:1

Colossians 2:9

He remained God- not a demi god, not a lesser god, not an amalgam of the divine and human.

Fully God and fully man

This is who descended to Earth ----- but it would have been fair if He didn't.

Nothing beyond or outside of Him urged Him to come to Earth. In fact, every decision, thought, action and inaction that is undertook by God, is because of who He is.

And who He is, is someone who has experienced the full “concert” of what humanity will experience.

Birth

Life

Temptation

Death

Judgment

Resurrection

God put on human flesh.

His divine nature didn't take on any human-ness and His humanity didn't take on any God-ness. His two natures didn't mingle together.

----------

Then He descended to the grave.

Everything necessary for our salvation was bought upon the Cross. Because Jesus took the full punishment for all the sins of all who believe in Him.

Our salvation isn't: “Jesus plus…”

Jesus plus this or Jesus plus that

We are saved when we repent and believe because the Son of God accepted the full punishment for all that believe in Him

There is no remainder of punishment for those who have repented and believed in Him.

Meaning that those who end in hell, will not have their sins atoned for….in fact, that is why they are in hell, to pay for their sins.

That is what hell is ----- it is punishment for sins.

2nd Thessalonians 1:8-9

This all means that no Christian will experience the punishment of God.

We experience discipline

We experience the consequences of our actions

But we do not experience punishment from God

John 3:16-20

This is why the teaching about purgatory is a false teaching and any that say it is real are wolves and need to be avoided.

Jesus did not go to hell, because the wrath of God was fulfilled on the Cross.

So where did Jesus go when He died? When His body went into the grave, where did He go?

He went to heaven

John 23:43

Jesus ascended to heaven and gave gifts to men.

Next week we will get into the gifts individually.
